Quilting Our Way toward Change
Many-Hands Quilt To Inspire & Symbolize Diversity & Transition
With Rev. Steve's encouragement, Lynn Frost has agreed to design and create (with help from all of us) a Many-Hands Quilt similar to the one that she and other quilters made and gave to Rev. Carolyn Colbert upon her retirement. This quilt will be ours, with our own colors, and represent every man, woman and child at UUCE as we journey to the next exciting stage of our church community. Just imagine this beautiful piece of art inspiring us as we make the transition to our new church home!
We need all of you to make it happen. Here is your to-do list:
.......1) Make two photocopies of one of your hands, and the hands of each member of your household or family. Don't cut the hands out. Leave the page intact. The copies will be dark and have a dark background, and that's fine. Only flat hands will be used. Drawn outlines of hands will not. Your regular array of rings and things will be included. If you have a guide dog, it would be best if its paw were photocopied separately.
.......2) Write your name and phone number on the back of each copy, along with your angle on diversity; examples follow.
.......3) Drop the copies off in the designated box in the church foyer by April 30th or send them to Lynn Frost (see Directory).
Lynn and Judy Sawyer have already drafted a quilt design. The plan is to have a cutting and pasting party with a few master quilters in May. The blocks will be created and sewn together over the summer. We will have a basting party in July or August. The quilt shall be ready to present to the congregation in the fall. Lets all put our many hands together to create something wonderful.
Many-Hands Quilt Diversity Check List
For our Many-Hands Quilt to reflect the diversity in our congregation, please tell us how you add to our diversity by including the following information on the back of the photocopy of your hand: name, phone, when you joined or became active at UUCE, age, gay/straight/other, alternately-abled (specify), race or ethnicity, and any othercharacteristics you'd like to share, (e.g., veteran, family composition, etc.), and your signature (approval to include your information in both binder and quilt). We are considering compiling all the information into a binder along with your handprint as a collective record of who we are. So be sure to sign if you approve of our assembling the information in written form as well as using it symbolically in the quilt.
