Hello Birders -

If Tuesday is anything like today, we WILL NOT be birding - I will  
check things out Monday evening on the weather and let you know.

I sent out the wrong date for the Eugene Christmas Bird Count -  it is  
Sunday, December 30 - not December 26.

The count on December 26 is the Brownsville Count.  Sorry about the  
confusion.

Hello Birders -

I am canceling birding tomorrow morning (December 4) and have no  
plans to go to breakfast - our Southwest hills neighborhood took a  
very hard hit from wind on Sunday night - no damage at our house but  
two houses on either side of us had huge doug firs come crashing down  
and there is small debris all over the place.  The forecast sounds  
just iffy enough for tomorrow that I don't plan to go out.

On the Oregon Birders Online today there was a report of 50 brown  
pelicans dying in the Coos Bay area - they found them dead along  
highways, in trees and shrubbery.  The high wind was too much for them.

See you next week if not before.

I'm lighting candles and saying novenas in behalf of the sacrificial pelicans. Seriously, this is horrific. 
  Is Louie and Elleen's house O.K.? Our neck of the woods looks worse for wear, as well. I'm building the ark tomorrow.

We were spared and Elleen and Louie were spared - it was Bill and  
Linda's McCleary who had a tree on their roof and two doors up on the  
corner on our side of the street who had the downed tree across the  
road.  The street crews were here at 1130 PM until about 1:30 AM  
running chain saws, using a back hoe and dropping large logs into a  
metal truck, so I had a bit of a time sleeping.  The darned wind  
blowing scared me a bunch and that didn't help sleeping either.  I  
wondered how you fared in terms of trees falling, etc.  I think our  
street has the tunnel effect.

I read tonight that the Governor has declared a state of emergency for  
the entire coast.  Have you been able to be in contact with Linda's  
family?  The SE Milwaukie area has a lot of flooding along Johnson  
Creek and nothing at the coast sounds good.

 Re storm: I watched? NW Cable News channel 49 for hours yesterday - they had great coverage of this storm, and it is really a bad one up in Washington. And Oregon lost our world's tallest and oldest Sitka Spruce to the storm!

Since there was no birding, I did my usual morning walk instead, but 
this time starting at Lot 9. It turned out to be a beautiful, warm 
morning with off and on sunshine. Birds were fairly quiet, and when I 
reached the pond it seemed to be be totally deserted, but before I left 
I had two herons, pied billed grebes, half a dozen buffleheads, 
cormorants, and mallards. Did a loop around by the river and back: 
three belted kingfishers, six robins, a bunch of song sparrows, scrub 
jay, crows, gulls (ring-billed?) wigeons, and some other sparrows not 
further identified. Not too bad for a fairly rapid walk.

Tuesday, December 11, we will return to Lot 9 behind Autzen Stadium  
for birding - meet at 8 AM - After being so disappointed last week  
when the weather was absolutely perfect and I had canceled, I don't  
plan to opt out so quickly next time.

After birding, we will have coffee and goodies at the Fifth Street  
Market food court between 9:45 and 10 AM.

Lot 9 for every Tuesday in January.

climbed on board Cindy Pitcairn's wheelchair during her yoga class at
the Y and could not be dislodged.  He accompanied her to Yumms, and
ducked under a credenza when she returned home.  Rummy assumed the
position, and Cindy expects a denoument sometime during the night. Hope

This morning we had such a glorious good time we decided we really  
couldn't skip a week - so - next week, we will do our bird walk on  
MONDAY - Christmas Eve - at 8 AM.  We will return to Parking Lot 9  
behind Autzen Stadium.  We ended up going to the Original Pancake  
House this morning because of poor service at 5th Street last week.   
On Monday, the group will decide where to eat - you can call my cell  
phone if you just want to join us for breakfast -  335-1637.

Tweeter Girl: Glad you had such a romp on Tuesday and
what a list you got!

We are leaving sometime today and will be gone until
Dec 30 or 31. Can't leave until UPS delivers a package
that we know due to a tracking number has arrived in
Eugene early this morning but could take all day to
get here.

We'll be making it a two day trip to St. Helena. Bad
weather either way, mountains or coast. Then we will
be at Doug's (no TV - bad for kids).Doug's family is
going to Hawaii. Marion and Sara arrive the 24th and
we'll make up some kin of Chriistmas celecration.
Marion and Sara will likely then go to San Francisco
to stay with friends for some period of time. All very
unplanned. M's been in NY with her boyfriend visiting
his family and she said it's been wonderfully
unswedish. Don't have take your shoes off when you
come inside, everyone is noisy and interupts everyone
else. Jolly good change.

Hi Annie -  Good t talk to you earlier.  We are heading out the door,  
so I might miss your call back.

I hope you have a good trip south and that the sun will decide to defy  
the rain.

I am taking Marika to the lab this afternoon for her to have an MRI on  
her brain.  She is claustrophobic and will be taking a sedative and  
shouldn't drive.  I haven't been to the place we are going - out past  
Gateway some place.

Let me know how things are going at Doug's and have a lovely visit  
with Marian - it is always a joy to be around our daughters.  I wish I  
were seeing Jodi.  We are having a very quiet holiday.  Betts has  
invited us over for Christmas Eve dinner.  We will have breakfast  
Christmas AM with Dave and family before they drive up to see Harry.   
Dave and I will be doing Christmas bird counts together on the 26th  
and 30th, so that will be nice.

I hope to see you at writing - with or without a written story.

Morning Doves -  sorry that you all got a message I had intended only  
for Anne  - I guess you all must have gotten her message to me as  
well.  I will make a note to double check the "TO" part in the  
future.  I don't expect Marika would appreciate me telling everyone  
she is claustrophobic!  I'm not sure I could tolerate an MRI  
myself.    Judie

I didn't get a chance to call you back. Delivery came
and we left on our trip. I thought it was pretty hairy
driving. We hit two snow storms and that snow swirling
in the dark in your windshield was nervewracking for
me. Cecil sailed through it all with the greatest of
ease. We spent the night at a Motel 6 in Redding and
Maria had my suitcase for a step up to my bed and she
used her little piddle pads for her toilet in the
night. She has a very active bladder, but really she
drinks loads of water.    Doug called as their bags
were arriving in Kauai and told of nightmarish ticket
fuck ups on boarding. They were with another family
who also got fucked over and as the wife and children
were boarding they stopped the husband and told him
he'd have to take a later flight So Doug doesn't know
where he is. 

So now we wait for Marion. No rain here now. That's
good. Cecil brought our bikes so tomorrow we'll ride
around a bit if it's still not raining..

Aren't you Ms fancy pants getting a Christmas eve
invite from Bets.

Going to have to buy some groceries and act like a
grown up.

Dear Birders -

I apologize for you all receiving the four personal messages between  
me and a member of this list.  Martha Osgood has now changed the  
management of the list so that a simple "reply" will not go to the  
entire list.  The only way a message about birding will be sent to  
everyone is by addressing it to birders at uuegene.org.   The only  
messages that are appropriate will relate strictly to birding and  
hopefully be one announcement per week.    Thank you Martha!

Hello Birders -

We will kick off the new year with a Tuesday, January 1 bird walk.   
Meet at 8 AM at the Alton Baker Park Parking Lot 9 behind Autzen  
Stadium.  This area continues to produce interesting birds.

The group will decide where to have breakfast - probably Fifth Street  
Market where there is plenty of free parking.  We will plan to be  
there by 10 AM.

I will have my cell phone on if you need to find where we are located  
any time after 7:30 AM -

Okay - let's face it - I'm a wimp!   The weather forecast says low of  
26 tonight and more fog - doesn't sound like ideal weather for  
watching birds.  As much as I would love to see you all tomorrow, Ed  
and I won't be at Alton Baker Parking Lot #9.......I have heard from  
at least 6 of our regulars that they will be out of town or  
unavailable -  so - I we will meet for birding on Tuesday, January 8 -  
weather permitting.
