Musings on the Response to Shay's Day:
Well, I'm not going to pass this story of Shay's Day on to any of my TAB
friends--it would just make the way they interact with me even more
awkward! I doubt the veracity of the story, but, of course, it
illustrates very well the way our society acts toward those who are
different (that is, when they act out of pity instead of outright cruelty).
I think I grapple with this issue of acceptance a lot: When people seem
to like me, is it in spite of, or because of, my illness? Of course I
want to be accepted and liked for the person I am, but that person does
have MS and the illness is part of who I am. I suppose it's analogous
in some ways to problems that the very rich have.
A larger question: Do any of us really know each other, and can we, or
would we even want to?
I'm reminded of Rev. Steve telling us from time to time that we are
perfectly imperfect people.
Thanks for listening, Cindy
