Accessibility Friends,
Since your meeting on December 4 is right AFTER our meeting, I
thought I would alert you to items on our agenda and where I think
things stand with them. These comments are so you can give me input,
so that I can help the Facilities Council decide what can and should
be done.
1. Today, Leslie Gilbert and I Iooked at the accessibility from the
parking area with a focus on wheelchair accessibility via a ramp. We
recommend that a five-foot strip be available for this, located as
follows: facing the church from the parking lot, it would be just to
the right of the church post nearest the street. We would paint this
strip yellow, and I would like a sign explaining why. I recommend
"Wheelchair Loading Zone." As to the ramp, I favor accepting Cindy's
offer to look into a portable ramp. The height of the curb at our
recommendation location is about 3 1/2 inches.
Because of concerns expressed about parking down near the street,
I've been watching that area and haven't seen what appear to be
problems. I need to know more what the problems are, and then I need
to understand David Gilmartin's ideas of what might be done (signs,
cones, etc?).
2. George Koris and I looked at the idea of making the doors to the
two more-nearly-ADA-compliant restrooms wider by using recessed door
hinges. George is convinced that this would be a major project
involving reframing and re-hanging the doors so that they open on the
left. George is convinced that we would have to have this work done
by a professional. In view of the expenses involved, we feel that we
need to be very sure that this change is needed before going forward.
3. This week, Ed Zack is going to look into putting up a solar light
near the upper part of the RE pathway, where light is most needed,
and he will do so unless there's some unexpected reason why not.
Assuming that this will work at all, we can then assess whether more
needs to be done to provide adequate lighting down to the RE area.
4. I remind you that we're committed to making a smooth threshold
for the entrance to the more-nearly-ADA-compliant restroom in the RE
area, when the temperature is high enough. In fact, Ed Zack will
take care of this.
See you December 4, if not before.
Ken
