NEWSLETTER SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Our Newsletter editor is Laura . She has taken on a huge task with a vision and humor. She writes:

Dear UU'all,

I'm Susan Verner and I'm your UUCE newsletter editor. The pay is lousy but there are a lot of perks.

The best perk is suggesting Gentle Guidelines, a set of questions to ask yourself as you prepare news and announcements for our newsletter. Here are a half dozen:

1. Is this item newsworthy? Try to crystallize what makes it so.

2. Can this item be shortened? How? Remember--brevity is the soul of wit!

3. Think about format. We are evolving toward a house style. Take a look at your last submission, both as you sent it in and as it appeared in print. Notice any nuts-and-bolts changes, such as date/month abbreviations. Try to incorporate those into your next item.

4. If the item isn't especially timely, could it be broken up? Breaking up is not so hard to do when you keep in mind that readers often skip over blocks of type. If your group has advice on a topic to share, consider doling it out over several newsletters, such as offering a "tip of the month."

5. Is the print version of the newsletter the proper place for your contribution? For example, if it's a committee report, how about having a capsule summary in the newsletter and directing readers to the full report available elsewhere?

6. Consider resources. In keeping with our 7th Principle, we don't want to be harm the environment (paper, delivery costs), but there are human resources to consider too. it takes our office staff and our hardworking copier several solid hours just to print the newsletter each month at its current length. We want to lighten this load on each other and the earth. How can you help streamline that process?

7. Submit your edited piece to the office at office@uueugene.org with "<month> NEWSLETTER" in the subject line.

Thanks,
Susan
