Moving Policies/Guidelines
Questions have been asked about the part of the Moving Guidelines that relates to our plan to refrain from immediately hanging decorative items in our new church upon moving in. Rev. Alicia has reminded our task force that we are blessed to have selected an architect who trained with Louis Kahn, an architect who was a master in the thoughtful creation of spaces that evoke spirituality through the use of light and shadow within that space. (Kahn designed the Unitarian Church in Rochester, NY which has been named by at least one architectural critic as one of the greatest religious structures of the 20th century.) Rev Alicia also has reminded us that we are creating a spiritual space, a different kind of place and one meant to evoke that type of experience. After visiting a variety of churches and experiencing their sanctuaries, we have come to realize that a room may be pretty, attractive or even beautiful without ever invoking a sense of the spiritual. The décor in our present church sanctuary has evolved over time and currently provides us with an environment that invites us set aside our busy lives and to settle into an internal spiritual place. We will want that same blessing from our new sanctuary and the chapel, but first we will need to ease into these spaces, settle into our seats, and listen to what the soaring beams, play of light and sense of place has to say to us.
MOVING POLICY AND GUIDELINES The Aesthetics and Logistics Task Force appointed by the Building Project Oversight Committee (BPOC) will oversee moving all inventory from our present church building to our new church home. We will determine what is acceptable in the new building, and what needs to be recycled, sold or donated to charitable organizations. We will also determine additional furnishings necessary for program needs and to function as a church. Our architect has designed an overall pallette and the Task Force and BPOC will work with him to determine the effect on fabrics from climate and exposure to the sun prior to making decisions about wall art. It is not our intention to be restrictive in our decision making. It is our overall goal to create a clean, healthy and safe environment with harmony of line and warmth of color that says “welcome”. To assure the health and safety of the congregation, extreme measures will be implemented as we make decisions about what will be moved. Because of the historic presence of mold and accumulated germs or wear and tear on existing inventory, the following guidelines will be strictly followed: All inventory will be thoroughly cleaned before it is boxed for the move and will be cleaned again when it arrives at the new building. All items containing fibers (pillows, stuffed toys, blankets, overstuffed furniture, carpet squares, quilts, banners, etc.) in which germs, insects, or mold could live, will not be moved. Limited exceptions will be made on an individual basis based on their historical significance, but items will be steam or dry cleaned prior to moving. All wood items that are chipped, splintered or obviously repaired will not be moved. No fabric wall hangings will be hung until after the move and a period of time has elapsed to determine the spiritual nature of the building. Until that spiritiual identity is established, architectural lines will serve as the art of the building. Indeed, decisions about placement of any art object will be held off until after we have occupied the building for a period of time.
