TOWN HALL MEETING HANDOUT
February 14, 2010


On Sunday, February 14, the BPOC is hosting a town hall meeting in the church sanctuary at 12:30pm following the second service. Childcare will be provided, but we need to know how many children to expect no later than Wednesday, February 10. We have prepared a summary of the information to be presented at the meeting, and it is provided here so that you have a chance to review it prior to the meeting. If you are unable to attend the town hall, but have questions or comments, please email BPOC at newhome@uueugene.org

PRIORITIES

     The following are the five congregational priorities relating to the move to our new home at West 13th and Chambers. They were synthesized from survey data as far back as the “Dreamcatcher” process in 2004, Listening Groups held in 2008, comments gathered from various tours of the new property, comments from 2009 “Town Hall” meetings and, from the survey conducted by the Committee on Congregational Ministry in December 2009.

UMBRELLA ITEMS THAT ENCOMPASS ALL CATEGORIES
     As you read priorites 1 through 5, please keep in mind that the following items will be considered in all decisions.

- Green/Sustainable
- Safety
- Accessibility
- Natural light
- Acoustics
- Modern technology
- Airflow
- Storage

1. MUSIC PROGRAM – Implications for Renovation/Remodel

- Require acoustics in sanctuary that support the quality of sound
- Modern sound system that will enhance music and performance
- Retaining the stage
- Appropriate flooring to enhance acoustics
- Separate room for rehearsal
- Adequate storage for choir
- Office space
- Adequate lighting for choir, musicians, performance

2. SUNDAY MORNING WORSHIP – Implications for Renovation/Remodel

- Natural light
- Modern sound system and multi-media technololgy
- Assure stage is up to code
- Easy access to social hall and kitchen
- Retain folding wall
- Primary entrance clearly established
- Assure pleasant reception area where visitors can be greeted and wait in comfort
- Update and improve quality of furnishings
- Seating to enhance service
- Ideal to have a small room where children and others who need to leave the service for a time may be comfortable

3. ADULT RELIGIOUS EDUCATION – Implications for Remodel/Renovation

- Multi-functional meeting spaces
- Small meeting and gathering spaces
- Adult size seating
- Adequate lighting
- Provide hearing assistance systems in meeting rooms
- Soundproofing desirable
- Storage space

NOTE: Small Group Ministry is an integral part of Adult RE, but groups currently meet in homes

4. SOCIAL JUSTICE To be a presence in the wider community to support Social Justice, activism, civic involvement, interfaith activity and leadership. Implications for Remodel/Renovation

- Comfortable and attractive spaces for large and small gatherings
- Attractive façade and noticeable signage
- Inviting landscaping and entryway
- Portable walls
- Quality kitchen
- Adequate space for coats, jackets, etc.
- Attractive, up to code restrooms
- Potential use of space for such things as “warming centers”
- Potential for laundry and shower facility
- Easily maintained surfaces for rentals

5. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION – CHILDREN & YOUTH Implications for Remodel/Renovation

- Seven classrooms at a minimum
- Glass inserts in doors for safety
- Need for one large gathering room, could also be used by choir
- Separate entrance
- Cabinets for storage
- Potential for baby potties
- Soundproofing
- Playground designed for safety
- One classroom for teens with appropriate furniture

PRIORITIES IDENTIFIED BY BPOC

- Provide outside income stream through rental of the property. Examples: Long term, ongoing rentals could include a pre-school, theatrical productions, music groups, farmers market. Short term rentals could include weddings, receptions, social functions and events requiring a commercial kitchen.

- Provide attractive and functional administrative space for staff that assures appropriate security

- Assure rooms are designed for comfortable socializing with adequate space for movement

These are items the BPOC must consider and in some cases move ahead with prior to the next Town Hall meeting.

* Electrical - bring up to code for energy conservation
* Heating/Cooling Systems
* Accessible toilets
* Asbestos abatement
* Air Movement/Odors
* Acoustics
* Minor Roof Repair
* Maintenance plan - indoor and outdoor
* Redesign of parking to meet code
* Begin planting trees/shurbs to enhance playground security
