| Seasonal Migrations
Every summer a community of gnats
moves into my apartment, as if it were
Martha's Vineyard or the Hamptons.
They favor the overflow slot
in the bathroom sink--waterfront property
is always the first to go. And then there's
the feng shui of the faucets facing south,
and the backup slot in the bathtub
for those unexpected guests.
Access to dining facilities is excellent--
a short flight into the kitchen reveals
a compost bucket on the counter
with mounds of carrot parings, cauliflower scraps
and banana peels for dessert.
But as with most real estate deals,
there is a hidden flaw--
as resident human I insist on
using the bathroom sink numerous times
per day, spraying, spitting and otherwise
polluting a perfectly good shoreline.
And I will shower, whether or not
the guest cottage is in use.
If they'd just stop flying in my face
when I brush my teeth, I suppose
I could consider adjusting
my shower schedule. Or perhaps,
when winter comes, they could host
me in some sunny gnat colony
in Arizona, a cozy hideaway
with an oversized slot in the bathtub.
