NOMINATING COMMITTEE -
April 18, 2010
Election Slate
OFFICERS
Mary Otten - President
Mary came to Eugene in the summer of 2003 and joined UUCE in the spring of 2004. UUCE is her first UU church. Since joining, she has been a participant in several small ministry groups, as well as a couple of sister circles. She has served on the membership committee, helped co-ordinate ushers and greeters, and is a member of the UUCE accessibility committee. She was elected to the Board in 2008. Mary is a member of the city’s Human Rights commission, where she chairs its accessibility committee, and is also a member of the Lane Transit Districts committee on accessible transportation. She shares a home with her husband Leo and guide dog Nashville, who is definitely the one in charge of the household.
Elliot McIntire - Vice President
Elliot McIntire was a member of this church in the mid-60s while attending the UO. Returning to Eugene after a teaching career in southern California, he rejoined the church and soon became a member of a men’s group, the membership committee, worship associates, and the Strategic Planning Committee, and since spring 2007 has served on the Board of Trustees. He also volunteers with the city’s Stream Team and the Oregon Genealogical society. At odd moments he does a little gardening, reads mysteries and science fiction, and tries to fit in a little hiking and bird watching.
Amy Siddon - Treasurer
I have worked as a bookkeeper, executive secretary, waitress, casino teller, landscaper, cotton press operator and home energy auditor. I graduated from UO with a BS in Art and currently work from home as a graphics manager. I am also attending Marylhurst University to complete an MBA in Sustainability with an emphasis in Natural and Organic Resources. I live in Springfield with my partner of 13 years with our two children and two dogs.
BOARD MEMBERS
Norma Landy - Board Member-at-large
Norma Landy and her husband, Al, moved from the Los Angeles area to Eugene in the fall 2001. Her children and grandchildren live in Eugene and in Wilsonville, OR. Norma is a retired Insurance Claims Manager. She became a member of UUCE in the spring 2002. Her past UUCE responsibilities and activities include: Sanctuary Choir, Membership Cmte. & Chair, Worship Associate, Mentor for Coming of Age, Stand for Children representative. She presently is a SGM Facilitator, and has served on the Board of Trustees since January 2009. Norma is presently taking piano lessons, loves to read (belongs to a political/historical discussion book club), committed to fast-walking daily, loves being outside, loves people, loves life...and recently joined the Eugene City of Peace action group.
Daniel Blades - Board Member-at-large
I have been a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Eugene for seventeen years. During this time I have served in a variety of capacities, most often with the RE program but also with the Nominating and Stewardship Committees. I have seen many changes in our church -- over a half dozen settled and interim ministers, a congregation shrinking and enlarging, children growing up and becoming parents themselves. But I believe we have come to the most critical transition in my membership as we remake ourselves as a Program Church and relocate to a new, larger and different building. A successful transition will create the foundation for continuing growth and a healthy future. As a board member at-large I would pledge to do all I can to achieve successful transition. My wife Felicia Sanders and I live on a small farm in the Row River valley nestled in the foothills of the Cascades where we raise grass-fed beef cattle. We have a blended family of three teenagers: Sophie, 18, Serena, 16 and Felix, 14. I enjoy working my farm, keeping up with current events, delving into history, pondering the mysteries of existence and listening to Rock and Roll. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve my church as a member of our Board of Trustees.
Marilyn Junkins – Board Member-at-large
Marilyn and her partner, Nisco, came to UUCE to hear a guest speaker and immediately felt at home – and never left. She joined UUCE in 2005; she and Nisco were married in the church in 2006. After participating in Newcomer Orientations twice before joining the church, Marilyn found that she really enjoyed the sessions. As a result, she joined the Membership Committee and has chaired that committee for three years where she has focused on creating a welcoming atmosphere. She has participated in and/or facilitated three SGM groups and been a worship associate for four years. She is also active with UUCE’s chapter of Interweave and local LGBT activities and events along with her partner, Nisco. Professionally, Marilyn works in PR and marketing communications and uses those skills in many areas at UUCE.
Susan Verner
Over twenty years ago, and despite having had all her shots, Susan caught UUism when she enrolled her two sons in RE in Urbana, IL. There she taught RE, co-chaired the RE Committee, and attended the Feminist Book Group. At UUCE, she edited the newsletter for two years, was part of the Fourth Monday Book Group, and served on committees (Events, Communications & PR). She’s enjoyed participating in several Small Group Ministries and co-facilitated one. In Real Life, Susan is the mom of two theoretically grown sons and spouse of a U of O administrator.
NOMINATING COMMITTEE
Betty Hosokawa
I have been a UU most of my adult life and joined UUCE when I moved here in 2001 to take a job in the Counseling and Advising Department at Lane Community College. As a part of this church community I have been on the Personnel Committee, the Strategic Planning Committee and now the Nominating Committee. I am a candidate for my second term on the Nominating Committee and also am interested in developing and strengthening leadership development options for church members as our church continue to grow. In my spare time I like to garden, fly fish, do water colors, travel and hang out with my grandkids and friends.
Nisco Junkins
Nisco and her wife Marilyn have been members of UUCE since 2005 and were married in the church by the Rev. Emeritus Carolyn Colbert. Nisco has participated in and/or facilitated three Small Group Ministry groups. She started the local chapter of Interweave in 2005 and acts as the chairperson of that group that holds monthly potlucks and a movie on LGBT issues. Our chapter of Interweave is the only one in the state of Oregon. Nisco has been on the Nominating committee for two years and the Membership Committee for five years, where she does most of the work and lets Marilyn get all the credit. She is currently working on getting the 2010 UUCE Church photo directory assembled and published. Nisco is also on the Worship Team where she is a frequent Anchor and an occasional Worship Associate.
BPOC (Building Project Oversight Committee)
Rich Margarum
I have been a member of the UU Church since 2002, volunteering mostly with kid and youth activities. I am a professor and Department Head in the Department of Planning, Public Policy and Management (PPPM) at the University of Oregon. My particular interests are around sustainable cities, collaborative process and environmental planning. In terms of my community work, I have been active in the Fairmount Neighborhood Association and the Long Tom Watershed Council. I am particularly interested in helping church find a new home that can help it better fulfill its mission and help it serve the community.
Wanda Kuenzli
After a lifetime in Los Angeles (except for two years in the Philippines with the Peace Corps in the early 60’s) I relocated to Eugene to be near family in the summer of 2007. I began attending UUCE in November of that year. Much of my work life in L.A. was as a non-profit executive in the voluntary health sector. Consequently, I have fairly deep experience in working with boards and committees, with organizational problem solving, public relations, decision making, determining priorities, resolving organizational issues, developing organizational systems and with long range and short term planning. I have also had responsibilities related to two different organizational relocations. As a newcomer to Eugene I have found the UUCE community greatly enriching. I had a wonderful experience with the Small Group Ministry program and enjoy participating in a Sister Circle. I look forward to Sunday sermons, music and fellowship and have appreciated the opportunity to give something back through being active as a member of the PR sub-committee of the BPOC.
Ed Zack
Edwin Zack is a retired building contractor and has been a member of UUCE for six years. He has participated in three Small Ministry Groups, camps at Seabeck every July with his granddaughter Matylda, and works with the Facilities Council. His twin passions for travel and volunteering (Red Cross, Cuba AyUUda, and an ongoing community building project in northern British Columbia) keep him out of most trouble. Reading (history and biography) and writing occupy his quieter moments. Having no patience with UU talk, he scrupulously avoids committee work and refuses to acknowledge paper work. He still wonders at the wisdom of his inclusion in the BPOC, with its charge from the congregation to turn the <censored>Ugly Building into the lovely and functioning center of worship and activity that this congregation of pilgrims needs.
