CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION PLANNING

Charge: Preparing internal and external events, history, themes, timing, classes, PR, reflections, etc., for the 2009 Centennial Celebration

We're is still looking for creative people to help with the planning process. We meet on the third Thursday of the month in the Social Hall at 7pm. Anyone interested in helping with this funtastic year is welcome. See also Archives/HistoryCommittee

Centennial Celebration Committee
May 15, 2008

ATTENDEES: ,George Koris, Rev. Steve Landale, Barb Prentice, Ken Ross, Jeanette Ruel Turvey, Douglas Turvey.

Opening Comments: Barb Prentice requested discussion about what process would be used to select a LOGO as this was the first item on the agenda.

LOGO selection: The group agreed on scoring the 12 entries by each individual privately, with a 3 for first choice, 2 for second choice, and 1 for third choice. The scores were tallied and the high scoring LOGO was selected as the primary one for the fundraiser mugs, possibly articles and or stationary etc.... The other entries would also be used periodically throughout the year in other areas like on posters and also be shown on the display wall.

Timeline: A review of the timeline was made with many recommendations and additions as follows:

January “Birth of the UU Church” pageant. (RE) Ken Ross shared the annual report with Candee Cole and she expressed interest but also would like as much information as possible. RE will be participating in a retreat next weekend and one item on they’re agenda is: How can they help and coordinate with CCC over the next year? So they'd like to know our plans as well as ideas that have been and/or are being considered.

February “Kick off Mug Sales” Jeanette will contact local vendors to get the cost of making mugs with the newly selected LOGO. Some companies have artists available to do a professional rendition of the LOGO entry, or it may be necessary to have a professional artist prepare an acceptable rendition for printing. She will present this information at the next meeting.
March “Chris’ Interview on DVD” Chris Nunes said he was comfortable with having his presentation ready by March 2009. He asked about Joy Hainsworth and her availability as he would like to set an interview time with her. His goal is to complete interviews in 2008 and do the editing in the early part of 2009.

April “Easter, Fashion Through The Years” Barb Prentice said that she has spoken to Kathy Dillon about the Women’s Alliance taking charge of this area. Kathy has started to create a plan which could include a parade; her ideas are still in their early stages.

May “Music Concert , Choral Piece Barb Prentice spoke to Tom Sears and instead of the first plan of a history of piano concert, it seems that he would like a Choral History, which would take around 12 minutes. He would like it to be presented at a Sunday Service so it could be shared with quite a few more Congregation Members than at an evening concert.

June “Sing-a-Long at Friday Potluck ,or at a Picnic “

July “Intergenerational Picnic at Tugman Park”

August “Box Lunch”
The three summer months had no changes or recommendations; however, again the Interweave Committee has not been contacted. Reverend Steve recommended contacting Nisco and Marilyn Junkins, but to wait a few weeks because they are temporarily unavailable. Jeanette offered to follow up on the recommendation.

September “CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION” Reverend Steve recommended that someone contact Janine Larsen, who is the District Executive of PNWD. She could help select a date for the celebration based on the district calendar with consideration to other events. Travel time for other members from Portland or outlying areas who may like to attend should also be a factor. Tandi Rogers Koerger, the district Program Specialist, would also so be a resource to consider. She would be aware of the weekend retreat dates for Young Adults which are usually scheduled in September. Ken Ross offered to follow up on this.

Barb Prentice reminded us that we had discussed having a float and/or a banner in the Eugene Celebration; this would be close to the Centennial Celebration in September. Steve thought it would be an excellent idea and it may be a fun intergenerational activity, RE with the help of the adults.

Steve envisions a Celebratory Service with some enactments, followed by a picnic or party. It should be a festive service probably on a Saturday around 2PM, and could be outside somewhere, with consideration to accessibility.

October/November/December “Sermons what will the next 100 years bring”

Reverend Steve is more inclined to incorporate past sermons “favorites and greats” as they apply holistically on a bimonthly schedule, rather than a “Unitarian Moment” on a specific schedule. He would also like to ask Carl Nelson to preach one of the sermons.

Annual Report: Accepted with no recommendation for corrections or changes.

Final Notes: Reverend Steve recommended that we forward the timeline to Jake Walsh, with Worship Associates; Candee Cole with RE; Tom Sears, Music; the new President of the Board Sarah Hendrickson, and Elliot McIntyre.

Reverend Steve appreciated the recommendation to send letters to former ministers and dignitaries in lieu of invitation to the 2009 Centennial Celebration and will be happy to formulate a letter if we compile key ideas that should be presented.

The group thanked George for the great presentation of Former Ministers on the Centennial Wall and made new recommendations for future displays. These included displays of significant lay people in leadership roles and different UUCE groups. George also shared a plan for displaying photos of the first church building along with one or two windows from the original structure.

Florence Douglas, a member of UUCE, should celebrate her 100TH birthday in October 2009.

Meeting Adjourned 8:17 PM
Next meeting is scheduled for JUNE 19, 2008.

CCC Minutes
April 17, 2008 7 PM

ATTENDEES: John Clay, Barb Prentice, Sandi Mann, Ken Ross, Jeanette Ruel Turvey, Douglas Turvey

Opening Comments:
The entries for the Centennial LOGO contest were shared, hopefully more entries will be submitted throughout the month and the final selection can be made at next months meeting

Jeanette passed out ads from different Coffee Mugs companies she researched on-line. It appears that they can be purchased for apx. $1.75 to $2.00 each and if we sold them for $10 a pair it could be a reasonable fund raiser. Barb suggested shopping locally as well. It was asked if there was any money made what it would be used for? It could be used to help fund the Centennial Celebration in September 2009.

John Clay will be meeting with George Koris soon to get the wall between the church entry doors decorated for the Centennial, the area appears as though its starting to be used for other purposes

Agenda
This timeline was sketched with the intention of sharing with Reverend Steve at next months meeting and see if it meets with approval and to get further recommendation and input from him.

~~~ • January “Birth of the UU Church” pageant. Barb Prentice, offered to work with Candee Cole on a Script and perhaps get Ellen Chase and Gil Osgood to help. John Clay said the actual first meeting of the Eugene UU church was in the Spring sometime, so if January didn’t work out it would be most timely if it was done early in the year.
~~~ • February “Kick off Mug Sales”, ask Gil Osgood to do a presentation about the Church History
~~~ • March “Chris’ Interview on DVD” could possibly be presented first at a Friday night Pot luck. This is tentative until Chris approves.
~~~ • APRIL “Easter, Fashion ThroughThe Years” Barb Prentice said that Kathy Dillon mentioned this might be something the Womens Alliance might like to coordinate this. Jeanette asked if Celebration Sunday could also have a Centennial Theme.
~~~ • MAY “Music Concert , History of Piano”, Tom Sears
~~~ • JUNE “Sing-a-Long at Friday Potluck ,or at a Picnic “
~~~ • JULY “Intergenerational Picnic at Tugman Park”
~~~ • August “Box Lunch” Barb Prentice said this idea was presented by a member at the Ice Cream Social and she will work on developing this idea a little further. (maybe June instead)
~~~ • September “CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION” Sept.19-20,2009 (3rd Sunday of the month) The first service for UU of Eugene was the 3rd Sunday in September. Barb suggested a formal service, similar to the installation service for Steve Landale, for Saturday night September 19. For Sunday, a celebration like a picnic or party that would be family friendly should be planned George Koris and Pam Love had offered to organize the party, this should involve a larger group than ourselves. Some suggestions of places were the Ball Park on Willamette?University of Oregon? High Schools like South or Churchill? John Clay asked if the formal service would be where we would invite past dignitaries. Ken Suggested sending letters to past ministers around fall of 2008. We should invite them to be aware of the Centennial Celebration and suggest if they are able, to come visit in 2009.
~~~ • October/November/December “Sermons what will the next 100 years bring”

~~~ • “Unitarian Moments should be presented once a month at Sunday Service throughout the year.”
~~~ • We will contact the Interweave Committee and ask them how the would like to participate in the Centennial Celebration, perhaps they would like a month they can feature.

Meeting Adjourned 8:27 PM
Next Meeting May 15, 2008

Centennial Celebration Committee
Minutes
March 20, 2008, 7 PM

ATTENDEES: George Koris, Barb Prentice, Ken Ross, Jeanette Ruel Turvey, Douglas Turvey
Chris Nunes, Joy Hainsworth and Sandi Mann notified us that they were unable to attend.

Agenda Items
Sandi Mann e-mailed the committee and asked that The LOGO contest be extended through April 2008 because there hasn't been any entries. The committee agreed on the extension. Douglas Turvey submitted an entry for the LOGO contest.

Jeanette reported that she asked Steve Landale if he would mind repeating a few past sermons during the centennial. He responded favorably saying that "greatest hits sermons" or ones that are particularly well-suited for us now as well as important parts of our history, would be a fine way to help us celebrate our centennial! He copied Jake, the worship associates chair, but in reviewing the history, he had the sense that He would enjoy preaching one or more of them himself... perhaps in costume, with some help! He also said he would be able to attend a Centennial Committee Meeting in May.

George Koris offered that he would be willing to start designing a display for the wall that will be dedicated to the Centennial Celebration but wanted to know what should be put on the wall? The committee thought historical Photos would be a good start. George will contact John Clay and see what's available from the Archives.

The idea of presenting a "Unitarian Minute" during the Centennial should be on a regular basis at Sunday Service. These brief stories could be extracted from the History Book that will be published. This could not only generate interest for the book but could be a welcome points of interest for the congregation.

Ken Ross will discuss with Candee our idea of a "Birth of our Church" pageant around Christmas as a perfect lead into our year of celebration. Perhaps she will also have an idea who could write it ? Suggestions? Ellen Chase???Gil Osgood? Kathy Dillon?. Ken will also ask Kim how soon we will need to have our timeline ready in terms of calendering, so we can reserve time far enough in advance.

The group discussed designing and selling a Green Bag with a Centennial LOGO on it as a fund raiser. After a little discussion it was agreed that it may not generate that much interest. Douglas Turvey suggested making mugs with a LOGO available to buy. Mugs in pairs one for home and one to leave in the church kitchen for social hour. Jeanette said she was pretty sure they could be acquired pretty reasonably and would research this for the next meeting.

Barb Prentice mentioned that Tom Sears wants to give a history of piano in Spring April 2009, this should be considered for the timeline outline.

The big deal should still should be in September.

Al agreed that the agenda for next months meeting will be to create a more definite timeline for 2009 so it can be reviewed with Steve Landale in May.

Assignments
Ken Ross -Pageant, Candee Cole and Calendering with Kim.
George Koris Centennial Wall
Jeanette research mugs for fund raiser
Barb will talk with Tom about composing a piece and doing a concert for the occasion.

Next meeting is scheduled for Thursday April 17,2008 at 7PM in Breezeway
Meeting Adjourned 8:20 PM

Centennial Celebration Committee
Minutes
12/13/2007, 7 PM

ATTENDEES: John Clay, Joy Hainsworth, George Koris, Chris Nunes, Sandi Mann, Barb Prentiss, Ken Ross, Jeanette Ruel Turvey, Douglas Turvey

Opening Comments and Reporting on Assignments:
George presented the announcement for the Ice Cream Social that will appear in the January newsletter. The invitation will also go in The order of Service on 1/6/08.. Joy Hainsworth said Kathy Thomas will come to next month’s meeting to discuss graphic design for a logo. In order to add logo to invitations it would be needed soon so the group agreed that this could be delayed. George wanted to know how many invitations to print on card stock for Steve Landale to hand out. After much debate about distributing invitations at Coordinating council (Steve couldn’t be there), Ken Ross could hand them out but there would be about 20 key people present but approximately an equal number missing. Ken Ross suggested that instead of an actual invitation, it should be posted on UU Biz. Martha should be able to make an add that would have folks RSVP, all agreed. Barb suggested a LOGO contest again. Perhaps this contest could be done in February to continue generating enthusiasm for the Centennial Celebration. John Clay asked Gil to come to the Ice Cream social and he will check his availability,

Agenda Items
RSVP box will be out on Jan. 6 and Jan 13, On Jan 13 we will request a brief line in the “Order Service” reminding people that the 13th is the “Last Chance” to sign up.

Details of the Ice Cream Social: 2 or 3 people will dish out Ice Cream, for about the first half hour. Than for around an 1 hour a member of the CCC will work with attendees at each table to gather ideas and finally the ideas should be presented. After RSVPs are reviewed we will assess childcare needs and ask Candee Cole for assistance. George will purchase Ice cream and supplies, including juice for kids, coffee can be brewed for adults.

Questions for each table were created and are as follows:
• How can this celebration reinforce UU values?
• How can we involve children and youth?
• What role do you see Social Justice playing in the celebration?
• What role do you see music playing in the celebration?
• What kind of Reenactments and Skits( Sermons from the past) should be planned?
• What should the actual 100 year Party in September 2009 look like?
• Should we invite dignitaries during 2009 and who ?
• What should happen at Sunday Services in 2009,
• What would you like to learn about the history of the church?

Budget:
John Clay asked Chris Nunes what his budgetary needs would be. Chris informed the group that he is in the process of purchasing a HD Camcorder for business purposes, which he could then use for interviews. Once he had the camcorder he would only need mini DV tapes.The number would depend on how many interviews, and how long they ran. He estimated 10 hours worth of tape at a cost of $3-$5 per tape. John said the Archives Commitee has no slush fund and is having to be conservative but thought they could manage Chris’ reasonable request. Chris estimated beginning the Interviews sometime in Spring 2008 and taking a few months to complete, but possibly a few months more for editing.

Assignments:
Ken Ross and John Clay volunteered to discuss a budget proposal for 2008-09 and present at next meeting. The deadline for this proposal is coming up soon and they have experience in this area.
For the Ice Cream Social, Jeanette will make sure there is poster size paper with each question written out for presentation. Barb Prentiss will make tent placards with questions for each table, Everyone from tonights meeting can be at the Social around 2:30 PM and will help with set up and clean up. Sandi Mann volunteered to work with Kathy Thomas to formulate a plan for the LOGO contest. Joy will call Kathy Thomas and inform her of this. Maybe she and Sandi can connect before the next meeting and let us know what they are thinking so it can get started by February.

Next meeting is scheduled for Thursday 01/17/07 at 7PM (hopefully the breezeway room)

Meeting Adjourned 8:15 PM

Centennial Celebration Committee
Minutes
Nov. 15, 2007

ATTENDEES: John Clay, Joy Hainsworth, George Koris, Ken Ross, Jeanette Ruel Turvey,
Guest Speakers:
Marilyn Junkins and Nisco

Opening Comments:
Marilyn Junkins and Nisco came and briefly described and incident which occurred at the previous Sunday Service. A woman described feeling unwelcome when she tried to sit in an empty seat, another person said the seat was being saved for their partner. Marilyn and Nisco made an appeal to the group to consider not saving seats during services so anyone may be seated, feel welcome, and create an opportunity to be open to new connections.
Joy Hainsworth informed us that d.maria volunteered her services in story writing for the Centennial.

Agenda Items
Money: John Clay informed us that the board has not allocated funds in 2007-2008, specifically for the Centennial Committee. They feel that this year they have allocated additional money to the Archives Committee and this should be adequate. The total Archive Budget is $400. This seems a little slim for both committees, but rather than allocating a certain amount for each group, it was agreed that because the financial needs of the Centennnial Committee weren’t to large, expenses should be reimbursed as we go. Possibly the greatest expense would be incurred for the Ice Cream Social.
In 2008-2009 a more formal request for funding can be re-evaluated, this may require input from Chris our Videography Representation, and possibly other areas following the Brainstorming Party.

Ice Cream Social: Date Jan.19, 2008, 3:30 -4 PM, Social Hall is reserved. George Koris will create invitations and announcements. The announcement will be in December 14, Newsletter. The invitations will be in the Jan. 6, 2008 Order of Service. Steve Landale was asked to hand out personal invitation to key Committee Chairs, or leaders, and he said he’d be pleased to do so.
We need sound/accessibility, George Volunteered to set up for Ice Cream Social including purchasing Ice Cream. Everyone in the group volunteered to help with Clean up and made a commitment to be there to supervise individual tables.

Essence of the Party: Ideas and enthusiasm from different areas of Interest. John will ask Gill to give a brief presentation. Each table will be given a starting idea or theme and brainstorming can blossom from there.

Logo: It was agreed that a design should be developed as soon as possible. The sooner this happens the more familiar it can become. Joy Hainsworth offered to ask Kathy Thomas if she would be interested in taking on this task as she enjoys an interest in this area. Recommendations included having an Old Fashion Flare, incorporating the date 1909-2009, Unitarian Universalists of Eugene and the chalice.

ASSIGNMENTS
George will prepare invitations, John Clay will ask Gil to give a presentation at the Ice Cream Social, Joy Hainsworth will request work begin on the Centennial Logo.

FUTURE ITEMS
What Should Happen in 2008: Interviews, Write Skits, Schedule Ideas, Preparation for 2009
Joy also suggested including Womans Alliance. She can imagine a skit or some acting done by Ellen Chase, Sally Dean and Linda Ansen.

Next meeting is scheduled for Thursday 12/13/07 at 7PM in Room 5
Meeting Adjourned 8:25 PM

Centennial Celebration Committee
Minutes
Oct. 18, 2007

Attendees: John Clay, Kathy Dillon, Joy Hainsworth, George Koris, Sandi Mann Barb Prentice, Douglas Turvey, Jeanette Ruel Turvey,

AGENDA ITEMS
Opening Comments:
D.Maria has announced that she would be getting involved in another committee and no longer would actively participate in the CCC.
Additions to Minutes from last meeting None.
George Koris recommended we go to the board for money, so that we are not funding out of our own pocket (seed money) 2007 ask for $250.00 misc supplies, 2008 ?, 2009 Party Budget. Kathy said we should give a general idea of what money is needed and for what. Joy volunteered but that later changed to Barb to go to Olga. she will probably recommend that it go to executive committee.

Questionnaire
Barb Prentice had compiled a summary of the responses from the congregation: questions are as follows:

1. Why did you join the church?
2. How has this church affected you in your personal life?
3. How did you get through some of our church’s difficult times?
4. How have we (and how should we have) affected community action on public issues?
5. After today’s sermon (about Universalism) I would like to hear more stories about the history of the church.
6. Have someone tell the story of the candelabra
7. Memories of fun events
8. Who are the people, ministerial and lay members, who stand out in your memory and why?
9. What was happening here in the 50’s and 60’s?
10. What distinguishes UU’s from “institutional religion and how have you seen this change?
11. Can you illuminate us on the roots of our UU heritage connected to our particular church?
12. Douglas asked how did the Church handle great depression, the World Wars. Was the church able to afford a minister?

The following list of people were identified in the questionnaire:
Ellen Chase Joy Hainsworth Janis Elliot Carl Nelson Martha Osgood Gil Osgood Eve Mc Connaughey Florence Douglas Barbara Davis Carolyn Colbert Betty Rutherford Lori Ten Brinke Dirk Ten Brinke Andrea Thompson Steve Landale Walt Davis

Twenty five of these and people interviewed by ARCHIVES (see last page)will be selected for interview. Kathy Dillon and John Clay will work together on this decision.

It was mentioned that Chris would like to listen to archive tapes to get cross section. Will someone help Chris with interview, help him cover all points. Key questions to stimulate interviews. Perhaps a get together to develop questions should occur. What will happen with video tapes, will they be given to archives, how will they be used during the celebration? It was suggested that through out the year (2009) we should have a video presentation running in Library during Social Hours. A Big Screen presentation should be planned for the actual Birthday Party.

TIMELINE
Brainstorming Party: John Clay would like to get a lot of people from different groups from UU church to get a better variety of information and a lot of it. Pancake Party (Barb), Ice Cream social (Doug) Cream Puff Party (Kathleen) .

The majority of the group agreed on an Ice Cream Social. Ask for donations Ben & Jerry’s, Schwanns, Costco Ice Cream. We will aim for Saturday Jan.19, 2008 3;00pm -4:30pm. We will make personnel invitations and ask Steve Landale to hand out to each group and ask for representation. To encourage Brainstorming, there should be a CCC member to Lead at each table, and a specific question for each table. RSVP will be requested to estimate turnout and need for day-care.

Another brief discussion of expenses was brought up surrounding Ice Cream Social. Some items that would be listed in for expenditures in 2007/08 are:
.....• Stationary to make invitations
.....• Funds to have Posters printed (Kinkos/ Office Max)
.....• Photo supplies ( stationary/ developing)
.....• Digital supplies, DVD’s, disk for storing info.
.....• Supplies to do brainstorming flip-charts, markers, etc...
.....• Ice Cream to serve all at the Brainstorming Party.

Kathleen said possibly when we ask for money from the board someone may get wind of what’s going on and volunteer donations.

Multi-media presentation: Chris should probably have interviews and media presentation ready by Jan 2009.

ASSIGNMENTS
Kathleen and John Clay work on interview questions and list of interviewees Jeanette make invitations for Ice Cream Social after confirming with Kim the Social date. Joy/Barb will go to Olga for money

A suggestion to wait until the next meeting to identify the next milestone in the time line was accepted.

FUTURE ITEMS
LOGO for the Centennial, was suggested by Barb Prentice and all agreed. A contest could be held to have UU congregation participation

Centennial Celebration Committee
Minutes
Sept 20, 2007

ATTENDEES: John Clay, Joy Hainsworth, George Koris, Pam Love, Chris Nunes, Barb Prentice, Ken Ross, Jeanette Ruel, Douglas Turvey.

AGENDA ITEMS
Newsletter
: d.maria (absent) Most of the group had reviewed the article via e-mail and approved of it. However, a little editing should be done to include the date, October 7 2007, is when a survey , and questionnaire for suggestions would appear in the “Order of service”.

Member assignments and Comments: Ken, helped Chris connect directly with Bob Kaeser who has the Doctors of durability tapes/info. Ken also included us the “CCC” on the Board agenda to petition them to grant us committee status.
Chris is able to borrow a video camera from the U of O, he would like to accomplish the interviews in no more then 5-7 sessions. He would like to address the congregation on Oct. 7 the day the questionnaire is in the “Order of service”.( Chris I was messing with my computer and missed parts of what you said, if you have any thing to add please let me know this is still Rough Draft.)
Barb will make a suggestion box for the Oct. 7 Service and feels it should be left at the church for several subsequent services. She will develop a questionnaire/survey for the Order of Service.
Douglas spoke to Kim about our regular meeting being on the 3rd thursday of each month and originally she intended for us to meet in Room 5, but because of members needs, the breezeway classroom will be requested!
George still will be able to create a poster after he sees the Newsletter article and will have it ready for Sunday Oct. 7.

Decide on time for questionnaire in Order of Service and Suggestion Box: October 7,2007 was agreed on by the Committee.

Develop Questionnaire: A lengthy discussion ensued with some of the following points being made and recommendations for questions and survey:
1. Who should we interview ? (this probably should be the last question with a place for a write-in) Doctors of Durability to honor people around 80y to 90y, Chris and Ken have a list of who’s been interviewed? George said People who have been designated DOD shouldn’t be the only ones. Chris agreed, should not only be older members but important, influential members. Ken says we should have no rules for criteria based on longevity. John Clay, said look at the sign in books after 1958, their pretty accurate. Who signed the book by a certain date/ or was member at certain date.
2. Create a new interview. George said the purpose of the interview is to celebrate the church not just the individual. So the interview could include some of the following questions. (sample questions)What led you to UU? And what keeps you here? How has the church evolved? what are the most memorable changes?crisis’? fun (instead of fun, how about delightful events?) in the Life of the Church. Barb added that general questions, not memory of a particular minister, LOADED! to Joy ministers were not important, so no minister questions.
3. What effect do you think the church had on people during certain eras, like the Vietnam War (maybe a different time, Vietnam too controversial)? Pam recommended to let spontaneity and creativity be allowed to develop, questions should only help the interview along. George, suggested it should not be like a job interview. John Clay stated it might help to have list of things that happened in each decade.
4. John would like to ask people in the congregation, “What do you want know about this church from somebody we interview? If you put a persons name what do you want to ask.?( this could go with #1, which may end up last)

ASSIGNMENTS
• d.maria will submit a newsletter article with minor editing( the deadline is 9/21/07) .
• George Koris posters after he sees article.
• Barb Prentice insert a questionnaire in the Order of Service Oct 7.

FUTURE ITEMS
Barb mentioned a possible Fund raising project. We could create and sell Memorial Plate commemorating or featuring the present church which we will be moving out of sometime in the near future. Her sister had an experience with a similar project which was quite successful.

Next meeting is scheduled for Thursday 10/18/07 at 7PM

Meeting Adjourned 8:15 PM

Centennial Celebration Committee
Minutes
August 22, 2007

ATTENDEES: John Clay, Joy Hainsworth, George Koris, Pam Love, d.maria, Barb Prentiss, Ken Ross, Jeanette Ruel, Douglas Turvey.

AGENDA ITEMS
Doctors of Durability- Ken reported that he and Bob Kaeser have copies of tapes of services by Carolyn Colbert from 2004,05,06. Bob would like to know what part of the tapes would be of use to the committee. Discussion ensued and it was concluded that the tapes did not fit our needs or intentions. Carolyn gives short bios of the interviewee, not actual life stories and their history with the UU church. Chris Nunes was unable to attend but requested some assistance in identifying key people to interview and what to ask. He recommended a suggestion box. The committee thought printing a questionnaire in an “Order of Service “ that could be submitted to a suggestion box at the end of that mornings service would help accomplish this, however this should wait until an article is written in the newsletter ..see committee direction.
Music Contact-John reported that he invited Tom Sears to our meeting but he is to busy to attend right now. Tom would like to attend when the planning has progressed further, he also seems to more interested in composing new music to commemorate the centennial then focusing on older pieces.
Media-Chris Nunes is in charge of media projects and will try to attend future meetings. Jeanette’s son Ryan, agreed to be involved as community service project for his media class at Churchill High School. The media lab and possibly other students will be available to help Chris.
Our Committee’s Direction- sub-committee a long discussion, we decided we should have full committee status and not remain a sub-committee of Archives. Ken will take this to the coordinating council. The following officers were accepted: Chairperson, Joy Hainsworth; Secretary, Jeanette Ruel,; Treasurer, Barb Prentiss. It was mentioned by d.maria, that a member of the finance committee would need to be involved also. It appears that there isn’t much awareness in the UU congregation of this committee or event. Suggestions to gain awareness included posters, a newsletter article and a brainstorming party to generate creativity and excitement for upcoming centennial year.

Minutes
Centennial Celebration Committee Meeting
July 24, 2007

In attendance were Joy Hainsworth, d.maria, John Clay, George Koris, Bob Taylor and Pam Love.

Historical Vignettes
Joy approached Sally Diehm and Linda Anson and asked if they could act in the Celebration's historical vignettes and they agreed. Joy also talked to Dorothy Mitchell, Cindy Pitcairn and d.maria about crafting a script for the actors. They affirmed they are on board with  the project, too.

Maria also suggested talking to the Fiction Writers group to gain more writers for the vignettes.

Past Sermons
Jake Walsh (chair of the Worship Associates) was contacted by maria with the idea of using sermons of the past as part of Sunday services during the 2009 Celebration year. He indicated the Worship Associates were already thinking along the same lines in using historical sermons on future Sundays.

Bob said there are sermons in the church archives dating back to the beginning of the founding of our church. George said it was important that the archived sermons used during the Celebration remain intact with the language of the day.

Archival objects
Archival objects were discussed.The inclusion of the words to Spirit of Life, once hanging in the Sanctuary, was agreed by all as an important piece of church history. The words were written on a oversized poster that was done in calligraphy by Libby Masarie. The CCC will try to find it and see if it still exists in storage onsite.
The gold glass window from the original church on Ferry Street is another desirable object. It is currently in storage in the barn at Joy and maria's farm.  The CCC will consult with the Coordinating Council to find a suitable window where it can be displayed. Bob said he has a source that can make a custom plaque for the window.

Personal Reflections
Jeff Wright is giving the committee a complete set of Personal Reflections. Consisting of 15 volumes, they will be used for research and dramatic readings from  church members of the past and present.

RE Involvement
Pam sent out an email to RE children, youth and advisors. It was an invitation for all to attend the CCC meetings, especially hoping for ideas and participation of the children and youth for events during the centennial year of UUCE. We will keep them informed about future meetings of this committee.

Music
Joy contacted the Music Committee. Tom Sears has indicated he would like to lead the effort of using old hymns and music, incorporating them in services during the 2009 Celebration. John will extend an invitation to Tom to attend our next meeting.

Meetings
Bob will extend to Rev. Landale an invitation to attend the next CCC meeting.

John will attend the Coordinating Council's meeting on Saturday August 18th, representing the Archive Committee. He also will send out via email CCC meeting reminders and will put all parties on a news list serve.

Meeting Reports
Maria suggested we include Biz-UU on the list serve, too. That way, all committee/organizing chairs would receive communications and meeting minutes from the CCC. She added it would be good to have the various representatives from church committee groups attend our meetings and report back to their groups, so they could take on projects/events for the centennial year.

The next meeting of the Centennial Celebration Committee will be Wednesday August 22nd at 7 PM.

CCC Minutes were submitted by Pam Love.

MINUTES
UU Centennial Planning Meeting
June 28, 2007

In Attendance: John Clay, D.Maria, George Koris, Pam Love, Sandi Mann, Eve Mcconnaughey, Joy Hainsworth, Jeanette Ruel, Bob ?

Item #1 Facilitator/coordinator/chairperson?
This person would need e-mail access. Their duties could include, liaison between smaller satellite committees, scheduling meetings, organize, merge and coordinate ideas. Bob and/or Ken suggested that advertising on the UU web site or UU newsletter/bulletin for volunteers for coordinator and representatives from other committees to help could be done.

Item #2 What is our time line define actual dates and time frame?
a) Should we start in Sept. 09 (actual Birthday), have it start with a big celebration and go through 2010. ( 2 calendar year dates may be confusing)
b) Should it start in May 2009, to coordinate with events with those in May 1909, and have a real big celebration in September. (this didn't seem too favorable because a lot of members are busy with other summer vacation type stuff.
c) Start Jan 2009, have a big celebration in Sept. 2009, and continue celebration through the end of the year! (take advantage of summer events fairs etc.. to bring Celebration to the community, big celebration in Sept. would create reunion type atmosphere for UU members after summer, and holidays at end of year could include nostalgia from previous UU holidays etc
Attendees agreed that the last proposal (c) was most favorable. George Koris motioned to vote on last option, all nine attendees voted yes to that time line. Events and highlights to begin Jan 2009 ; ongoing events throughout the year, BIG PARTY, Sept.09, more events until December 2009.

Subcommittees that would be important were identified as follows: Events, Music, Media Communications, Drama/Theater, Children

Some Suggestions for presentations:
• Old/(past significant) Sermons to be incorporated in services by Worship Associates?
• Horse and Buggy with Peebles: Drama (Sally Diehm, Ellen Chase)?

• Redo personal reflection: ask Jeff Wright ÅgDoctors of DurabilityÅh
• Interview many people with same question, video or notebook presentation (kinder train format?) Music from the earlier years.
