CHILDREN and YOUTH
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION (RE) PROGRAM

MISSION STATEMENT

Recognizing that creating a spiritual community and encouraging diverse beliefs is a life long process, the religious education community will strive to nurture growth by:
  • offering a safe, secure, and caring environment that supports children in their individual searches for truth.
  • fostering friendship and mentorship among peers and across generations.
  • celebrating diversity and supporting anti-bias beliefs and actions.
  • providing developmentally appropriate activities and experiences that accommodate diverse learning styles.
  • promoting a love of nature.
  • sharing knowledge of world religions and cultures.
  • introducing Unitarian Universalist principles and purposes.

Visitors are also welcome! If you decide you would like your child to attend these classes on a regular basis as a visitor, you will need to fill out a Visitor Registration Form (PDF).

2007-2008 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

The UUCE Religious Education program for children and youth is on a three year curriculum rotation. We just completed the ‘UU Identity” year. Prior to that was “World Religions”. This year we are back to a very important year, “Peace and Social Justice”. Although we model and teach the values of working for peace and standing up for justice during all of the curriculum years, this is the point where we focus on who we are as peaceful human beings (learning skills and practicing them!), what we stand for, doing hands-on work for those in need or trying to change things we find unjust…generally…how we practice our values.

What do YOU Stand For??
Come and share passion for peace and social justice with our children and youth!
>>° Want to help instill a sense of justice and equity in our young people?
>>° Want to provide opportunities to help our kids think about values and choices?
>>° Want to help them identify their passions and get them connected to social change?
>>° Want to watch them become the awesome humans they are capable of being?

This is an especially good time to volunteer your time in the classroom. It is a new year, with new and refreshed energies, a new minister and much excitement afoot! Many adults have commented in the past how much they have learned about our religion and values by volunteering with the kids and youth during the year!   We need classroom volunteers that are male, female, elders, young adults (18+), parents and grand-parents...and everyone in between to offer a safe and diverse program. (Parents can’t do it all and we want the kids to have experiences with many perspectives!). We also need folks to hold babies, hang out with teens, and play with preschoolers.

What is my commitment if I volunteer?
Two Sundays per month, at one service…one Sunday leading the activities provided by the DRE and RE Committee., and one Sunday, assisting a different lead volunteer.
Quarterly volunteer meetings, participating in RE services as needed.

What if I have never taught before?
We offer a training/orientation on how to work with kids and youth, plus there are quarterly volunteer meetings to stay connected and get ideas. In addition, you will have direct support from the DRE and RE Committee on curriculum and classroom management. The lessons are easy to use, and many give presentation suggestions.

Other Options for Participating
>>>
* Join short term task groups and help create fun for all ages. We need people to help put on our Halloween party, Advent Garden, the Holiday pageant and Easter activities! We will be needing mentors for the coming of age program as well as Coming of Age program planners.

>>>* We are developing a picture book wish list. If you would like to be a book donor and sponsor a book or two for the program, please contact the DRE.

>>>* We need a new hot laminator...the kind where you send 8 1/2x 11 sheets through (table top) Drop me a line if you have one collecting dust or would like to sponsor/help get us a new one! :)

>>>* We are also seeking more childcare providers for our church list. Do you have a great adult provider? Do you know a teen age 16 and older who has been reliable? Please have them call 686-2775.

WHAT DO WE DO IN R.E.?

A typical Sunday at church (during the school year) begins with young children being dropped off early with their teachers and children and youth in Kindergarten-8th grade attending the beginning of the service where they can participate in stories or songs, hear the choir and experience our intergenerational community. At 9:15 and 11:15 the kids go to their class groups and usually begin the day with a morning sharing time and candle lighting. They may sing a song or read something interesting that connects with the topic.

Lessons include topics around peace, social justice, character building, learning about world religions, other cultures, the environment and much more!  A story, movement activities and crafts all connect to the lesson theme. Free play time is also offered. The main focus of the program is to build deep connections between the children/youth and the UU community and to provide a safe place for young people to explore their beliefs and just be themselves.

We also have programs beyond Sunday classes:

OUR WHOLE LIVES
Offered to a different age group every year. Mandatory parent/guardian and youth information meetings are held prior to each series. The 28 session program begins with an orientation. It offers a safe environment for youth to explore questions they may not feel comfortable asking in other situations. This is a UUA faith-based sexuality program, and is offered at other times for adults, teens and elementary aged children. 7-8th grade OWL is offered every other year opposite the Coming of Age program. Coming of Age will run from October 2007 through May 2008. 7-9th grade OWL will be offered again the Fall of 2008. If enough interest, we will offer Sr. High OWL the 2007-2008 church year for 10-12th graders.

SECRET PALS
We match an adult with a kid or teen and they write notes to each other for 2 months. Giving each other clues about who they are. It all culminates in a big get-to-know-you-party. A great way for kids and adults to connect in our community. Secret Pals begin in January 2008.

SUMMER DAY CAMPS
5 day Summer day camps are offered each summer for registered children entering 1st grade through 6th grade in the Fall. In the past, K-1 grade Our Whole Lives, 4-5th grade Our Whole Lives, and the UU School of Wisdom and Wizardry have been offered as Summer day camps. Registration forms and information will be available in May 2008.

SPECIAL PARTIES
Class groups will hold special parties occasionally in the evenings and on weekends for kids and parents to connect. Sleepovers for older kids and teens, pizza gatherings, movie nights and the quarterly RE Family Outing and Birthday celebration are all offered throughout the year for UU connection and fun.
