UUCE GROUPS TO HOST TABLE, WORKSHOP, AT HUMAN RIGHTS COMMUNITY SUMMIT
UUCE will join other groups to engage the larger community in social justice issues at Lane Community College on Saturday, April 10, from 9:30am to 6pm. The morning program will begin with a keynote speaker and facilitated discussion, “What Local Human Rights Issues are Most Pressing to You?” Lunch includes a group art project, entertainment, and opportunities for networking. In the afternoon, from 1 to 5pm, attendees can join several of 18 different 75-minute workshops on a wide range of topics. A social hour, with more opportunities for networking, will follow.
UUCE’s “Just Say No To Bottled Water Task Force,” along with a representative from Food & Water Watch, will present an interactive workshop on the destructive effects of privatizing water, in bottled water form and in municipal water systems. Following excerpts from the documentary film, Blue Gold, discussion will center on local initiatives participants can take to combat corporate efforts to extract and control Oregon’s water.
You can register for the conference online at [<waiting for information>] or simply come to LCC at 9am on April 10th to register. Registration fee is $10, which includes a box lunch.

GREEN SANCTUARY AND BOTTLED WATER TASK FORCE PRESENT BLUE GOLD, APRIL 16TH, 7 PM, AT EWEB PLAZA
Blue Gold, The Fight to Stop the Corporate Theft of the World’s Water, documents the rise of a rapidly proliferating enterprise enabled by recent international trade agreements: the privatization and commodification of water. Based on the book by Maude Barlow and Tony Clarke, this PBS documentary shows how transnational corporations—namely, Perrier, Evian, Naya, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Nestle—are laying claim to the world’s dwindling fresh water supply. For more information about getting involved at the local level, contact Judy Sawyer, Chair, Bottled Water Task Force, at jsawyer@rio.com or 541-685-0731.

JOIN INTERFAITH CROP HUNGER WALK AT 2 PM, OCTOBER 3RD
Come walk a mile (or 3 miles) to consider what it’s like to face hunger daily—and to raise money to alleviate that hunger. Sponsored by OFRAH (Oregon Faith Roundtable Against Hunger) and our own SJUUCE, the Crop Hunger Walk will benefit Food For Lane County and people in poverty around the world who have to walk three or more miles just to get food and water. Berry Broadbent will be a “Recruiter” for UUCE. She’ll be looking for church members to “walk the talk” and get others to sponsor them on what we know will be a glorious October afternoon. So stay tuned!

Goal: The Ethical Eating Project goal states: In accordance with the UUA Ethical Eating Study/Action Issue, UUCE aims to optimize food consumption, production, security and purchasing habits of the congregation and the community.
Our current structure includes three working groups, or task forces, guided by a steering committee from the lead of each group. Current task forces include Gardens, Local Eating, and Bottled Water. Each task force seeks out activities to educate, promote, witness and apply ethical eating at an individual, congregational and community level.
Task forces meet separately to plan educational, outreach, and action activities and convene once a month to share information and updates. Contact task force leads for upcoming planning meetings, and keep your eye on the Weekly UUpDate.
