Potential Emergency Preparedness (think Haiti)
From the Committee of Congregational Ministry: Recently we have discussed how our community could be better prepared for emergencies or disasters and whatever else is entailed in the safety issues which are no longer our arena. There are resources nationally which could be consulted in the event of a large scale catastrophe and depending on the nature of the event there would be varying approaches and amounts of resources made available to us. A good place to start would be knowing the extent of our current safety plans. For the time being, our congregation may want to "do these 10 things before a tragedy occurs"
1. Collect names and cell phone numbers of key leaders.
2. Agree on a way for members to get in touch after a disaster (without electricity?)
3. Backup financial and other data and keep it in a safe place.
4. Get names of next of kin from members.
5. Plan how you would "shelter in place" if necessary. (If can't evacuate, can we shelter in place for 72 hours).
6. Organize a safety committee and develop an evacuation plan.
7. Train people in CPR and first aid.
8. Keep an emergency phone number list where you can find it.
9. Gather people who will be responsible for the congregation in an emergency and have them get familiar with one another.
10. Take the trauma team's 10-question survey about evacuations, first aid and emergency preparedness, etc.
Current First Aid at Church
Please take note of the location of fire extinguishers and first aid kits at UUCE.
~ Fire extinguishers are in the library (on the south wall), in the kitchen near the phone (just left of the entrance from the Social Hall), downstairs in Rms2 and 5, in the downstairs office in the furnace room. There are smoke detectors in the Religious Education (RE) rooms.
~ First aid kits are in the Social Hall above the trash receptacle near the exit to the deck, in the downstairs office under the sink, in the drawer of the purple cabinet in Rm3, on top of the tall cabinet in Rm2, and inside the tall cabinet in Rm2. - Ken Ross, Facilities Council
