RE 11/20/08
The Religious Education Committee has been working with me to figure out how to deal with the volunteer shortage that we have been experiencing since the Fall. We have made the decision to further group combine the age groups thus strengthening the teaching teams in the process.

Effective this Sunday, at BOTH services, K-2nd grade will now be meeting together in room 1 and 3-5th grade will be meeting together in Room 2. The up side for the kids is that the 4-5 grade who was quite cramped in the breezeway room, will now be in a bigger room with more space to move. We have very few 2nd graders in the program right now, but those we have will most likely enjoy what is happening curriculum wise in the K-1 group...they are still studying world religions through Celebrations...and are also hearing Creation Stories from many cultures as well. We feel that they will benefit from the combining, rather than being integrated with the much older kids. Of course, individual 2nd graders who wish to try out the older group may do so...please let me know ahead of time though.

This Sunday is a 1/2 intergenerational service, and the children from preschool-12th grade will be with us the first half of the service (middle school will be on a field trip)...then we will take them downstairs for activities. Please warn your child in 2nd-5th grade of the change.

Here is the wonderful teaching line up that we have. We are now just short one person in 9:00 Middle school!

"The 11th Hour"
A 90-minute documentary on the global environmental crisis, produced in 2007 by Leo DiCaprio to some acclaim,  paints a portrait of a planet at risk, while also offering some exciting and radical solutions for making life on earth sustainable. Tapping the brains of leading scientists and thinkers--including Stephen Hawking and Mikhail Gorbachev--the film provides hope and a way we can change. Discussion will follow.

This is the fourth in the 2008-09 series of films presented monthly by UUCE's Green Sanctuary team.  Films chosen for presentation, in accord with UUA's Seventh Principle and with the mission of Green Sanctuary, focus on environmental issues, the use and abuse of resources, recent innovations in technologies and industrial methods, efforts to protect and conserve habitats and resources, and new under-standings of the interdependence of life on Earth.

If you need child care for this event, please contact Amy Raven at 686-1970 by January 11.

Films scheduled for coming months:

March 22    "Unnatural Selection" and "Hidden Dangers in Kids' Meals" (genetically modified foods)

USHERS SOUGHT - openings and extra credit available now
Our ushers did an outstanding job last year and it is time to set up the ushers' schedule for this year. Ushers can be newer or more seasoned folks; they hand out orders of service at the door, set out and collect Braille and other hymnals, direct late-arriving people to chairs, take the collection, and count the number attending. Ushers are on duty twenty minutes before a service and the second service ushers stay a little after that service to collect the hymnals. Fifth week duties are even lighter because there are so few fifth Sundays in the year, yet you still get the glitter on your halo. To participate in this limited but vital contribution to our welcoming process, contact Nisco Junkins at niscohappy@comcast.net and mention which regular week and service (first Sundays of the month, 2nd service? third Sundays, first service?) would work best for you. And thank you so much!

Tithing Statistics 2007
Whether they believe in the principle of tithing or not, few Americans give away that much money. In 2007, the research revealed that just 5% of adults tithed. Not surprisingly, some population groups were more likely than others to have given away at least ten percent of their income. Among the most generous segments were evangelicals (24% of whom tithed); conservatives (12%); people who had prayed, read the Bible and attended a church service during the past week (12%); charismatic or Pentecostal Christians (11%); and registered Republicans (10%). Several groups also stood out as highly unlikely to tithe: people under the age of 25, atheists and agnostics, single adults who have never been married, liberals, and downscale adults. One percent or less of the people in each of those segments tithed in 2007. Among all born again adults, 9% contributed one-tenth or more of their income. The study also showed that Protestants were four times as likely to tithe as were Catholics (8% versus 2%, respectively)... The aggregate born again community (i.e., evangelicals as well as non-evangelical born again adults) donated a mean of $1971 to all non-profits and churches. That is the highest level reached by the born again population this decade. However, several giving patterns raised red flags for churches... The percentage of born again adults who gave any money to churches dropped to its lowest level this decade (76%). In addition, the money donated by born agains to churches as a proportion of all of the money born agains gave away has also dropped precipitously. During the first five years of the decade, an average of 84 cents out of every dollar donated by born again adults went to churches. In the past three years, though, the proportion has declined to just 76 cents out of every donated dollar...

The “Messiah” is back in jail
The self-professed Messiah of a doomsday cult went from presiding over his compound to a cell at the Clayton/Union County jail on Tuesday, courtesy of the New Mexico State Police. Wayne Bent, aka Michael Travesser, was booked into the jail— where he turned down an offer of juice and a bologna sandwich— on multiple charges of sexual contact with minors. In an Internet posting before his arrest early Tuesday, he said he had committed no crime and compared his impending arrest to the persecution of Jesus. Bent, 66, had previously admitted having sex with adult followers and acknowledged "lying with naked virgins"— although he denied having sex with minors.

Raskin on Equal Marriage
..."Senator, when you took your oath of office, you placed your hand on the Bible and swore to uphold the Constitution. You didn't place your hand on the Constitution and swear to uphold the Bible."

...Under our First Amendment, the State may never dictate to a church who it must marry. If the government wants to force a church to marry inter-faith couples or interracial couples or a couple of people who had been divorced or a gay couple, but the church does not want to marry these people for its own theological reasons, the government loses and the church wins. Under the Free Exercise Clause, a church may marry only those people it wants to marry and reject the rest even for reasons that other people may consider narrow-minded, stupid or prejudiced or indeed for no reason at all.
But, at the same time, individual churches or even coalitions of churches may never dictate to the State who it may marry. Even if a group of large churches decides that it is irreligious or sacrilegious or just plain evil for people to marry outside of their faiths or across racial lines and the churches mobilize their members to lobby the state legislature to unanimously pass a law against miscegenation or inter-faith marriage, these law will be struck down. They violate Due Process, Equal Protection and the Establishment Clause.
...
But the irony here is that the State today is stopping many churches and temples from marrying gay couples that the churches want to marry. That is, the State today is violating the rights of many churches--including Unitarian, Episcopal, Presybeterian and Jewish congregations, among many others--who seek to perform lawful weddings for their parishioners but may not simply because other groups of citizens think it would be wrong for them to do it.

"When the kings had died, a pauper, barefooted and hungry, came and sat on the throne. "God," he whispered, "the eyes of man cannot bear to look directly at the sun, for they are blinded. How then, Omnipotent, can they look directly at you? Have pity, Lord; temper your strength, turn down your splendor so that I, who am poor and afflicted, may see you!" Then--listen, old man!--God became a piece of bread, a cup of cool water, a warm tunic, a hut, and, in front of the hut, a woman giving suck to an infant. "Thank you, Lord," he whispered. "You humbled yourself for my sake. You became bread, water, a warm tunic, my wife and son in order that I may see you. And I did see you. I bow down and worship your beloved many-faced face!"

God Language
Many of you, I know, are bothered by the use of the word "God." I understand. I called myself an atheist when I came to Unitarian Universalism and was a devoted humanist for years, although my spiritual path has taken me elsewhere. But "religious language" doesn't have to mean "God talk." David Bumbaugh observes that a vocabulary of reverence is implicit in humanism, with its emphasis on human study and understanding of the natural world:
"Humanism . . . gave us a doctrine of incarnation which suggests not that the holy became human in one place at one time to convey a special message to a single chosen people, but that the universe itself is continually incarnating itself in microbes and maples, in hummingbirds and human beings, constantly inviting us to tease out the revelation contained in stars and atoms and every living thing."
This is truly religious language. As Bumbaugh says, it "whispers of a larger meaning to our existence," and carries with it implications for how we should live.
Your elevator speeches may be very different from mine. Hone them. Put a name to what calls you, and to what you find yourself called to do in response. Practice telling it to others. We have Good News for a world that badly needs it. But we may need to expand our vocabularies if we want others to hear us.
