Brief Summary of Congregational Survey
A survey combining multiple choice and open-ended questions was administered by the Committee on Congregational Ministry on-line and by paper in December, 2009. It was responded to by 44% of members of the UUCE and some additional friends. This is considered a sufficient response rate and the findings are judged as representative.
The multiple choice section demonstrates a very strong endorsement of the UUCE community as warm and caring, and of the UUCE as providing opportunities for individual spiritual growth. High ratings are also accorded to the music program, Religious Education, and Board responsiveness to the congregation. Most respondents think that they are contributing sufficiently in time and money. Concerns focus on financial constraints, challenges in working together and managing conflict, the level of involvement of the UUCE in the community, and levels of ministerial responsiveness and support.
The essay questions were broken down into five sections. The most meaningful aspects of UUCE are the Sunday Services, supportiveness among congregants, and a sense of the church as a home. The top three strengths are sense of community, the music program, and our shared values, including open-mindedness. The top concerns revolve around the budget issues, the move to a new facility and congregational growth, and several issues relating to ministerial style and involvement. The music program, Sunday services, and adult religious education are the most popular programs. The last question asked for any additional comments, and led to a mixture of comments pro and con regarding ministerial and Sunday service features, as well as other areas.
In summary, the survey highlights impressive strengths in the church community. At the same time, UUCE has been in the midst of major strains regarding the budget and regarding transitions--several major transitions of congregational growth, move to a new church building, and shifts in ministerial style and responsibilities. These strains have proven challenging to the lay and professional leadership, who are nonetheless rising together to the challenges and providing hope and guidance for successful movement forward.
